These two land in the same place on a shopping list: a full 48 amps, a 25-foot cable, a weather-rated enclosure and a scheduling app, at a price well under what ChargePoint or Wallbox ask for the same speed. If you have decided you want 48 amps and you do not want to pay a marquee premium, this is the choice you are making.

They separate on disclosure. Emporia publishes a NEMA 4 enclosure, an ENERGY STAR certification, a UL listing, a three-year warranty and wall-side energy monitoring. WOLFBOX publishes a NEMA 4X enclosure — a tier tougher — CSA certification, a stated conformance with UL 2594, an amperage dial, RFID and a four-group scheduling app. It does not publish a kW figure, a warranty term or an operating temperature range.

Our charging-speed math. WOLFBOX publishes no kW figure, so this is our arithmetic: 48 amps at 240V is about 11.5 kW, which at 3.5 miles per kWh is roughly 40 miles of range an hour. WOLFBOX's own marketing claims up to 46 miles an hour, which implies a more efficient car than our reference — treat 40 as the planning number.

Build note. WOLFBOX publishes 48A hardwired on a 60A-or-greater breaker, a J1772 connector, a 25-foot cable, a NEMA 4X waterproof and dustproof housing, CSA and FCC certification with a stated UL 2594 conformance, internal temperature monitoring, a flame-retardant design rated to 950°C, amperage set by a manual dial code or the app, app scheduling in four groups of three time slots with rate-based cost calculation, and RFID card or plug-and-charge start.

Where they are identical

Get this out of the way, because it is most of the spec sheet.

Both deliver 48 amps, which at 240 volts is about 11.5 kW — roughly 40 miles of range per hour at our 3.5 miles-per-kWh reference, or around 400 miles across a ten-hour overnight window. Both carry a 25-foot cable and a J1772 connector. Both are weather-rated. Both have a phone app that schedules charging. Both require a 60-amp circuit, because NEC Article 625 treats EV charging as a continuous load and sizes the circuit to 125% of the draw.

There is no meaningful charging-speed difference between them and there is no scenario in which one fills a battery faster than the other. Anyone telling you otherwise is describing marketing, not physics. One genuine difference in shape: the Emporia is sold in both hardwired and NEMA 14-50 plug-in configurations, while the WOLFBOX WE48 is hardwired only. The enclosure: WOLFBOX wins, and it is a real win

NEMA 4X against NEMA 4. Broadly, both are water- and dust-resistant classes suitable for outdoor use; the X denotes additional corrosion resistance.

In a normal suburban garage or under an eave, that difference will most likely never matter. Where it does matter is a coastal property with salt air, an industrial or agricultural environment, or a fully exposed wall with no shelter at all. In those settings corrosion is the thing that kills hardware over a decade, and paying nothing extra for a class that specifically addresses it is a straightforwardly good deal. The qualifier is temperature. Emporia publishes NEMA 4; WOLFBOX publishes NEMA 4X and no operating temperature range at all. A sealed box and a cable that stays flexible at −20°F are different claims, and cold is what makes charging cables stiff and brittle. The disclosure gap: Emporia wins, and it is a bigger deal

Three things Emporia publishes and WOLFBOX does not, in the order we would weigh them for a device that is going to be wired permanently into your house.

A warranty term.Emporia publishes three years. WOLFBOX publishes “lifetime assistance” and 24/7 support, which are support commitments rather than a warranty length, and we are not going to read a number into that phrasing. On a hardwired charger the cost of a year-three failure is the charger plus an electrician, and knowing who carries that risk is worth real money.

ENERGY STAR.Emporia carries the certification; WOLFBOX does not. The direct saving is small — ENERGY STAR reports certified chargers use about 40% less energy in standby — but a number of utility rebate programs name the certification as an eligibility condition. Wall-side energy monitoring.Emporia’s app reports measured energy at the charger. WOLFBOX’s app does rate-based cost calculation, which is an estimate derived from a tariff rather than a measurement. The distinction sounds pedantic and is not: the car’s own figure is battery-side and the charger’s is wall-side, and the gap between them is the charging loss you are paying for but not driving on. There is also a certification-wording distinction worth noticing. Emporia is UL listed. WOLFBOX is CSA certified and states that it meetsUL 2594 standards. CSA is a recognized third-party certification body, so this is not a case of one being certified and the other not — but “meets UL standards” is a conformance statement rather than a UL listing, and precision matters here. Where WOLFBOX genuinely pulls ahead on features

Two things, and neither is nothing.

The hardware amperage dial. WOLFBOX sets maximum current on a physical dial code inside the unit as well as in the app. That is a better design than app-only amperage limiting: it is set once by whoever ran the circuit, and it does not depend on a Wi-Fi connection, an account or a firmware update staying alive to remain correct. On a hardwired charger that is a genuinely sensible piece of engineering.

Scheduling granularity and RFID.Four groups of three time slots is more granular than most charger apps offer, which matters if your utility has a weekday peak, a weekend peak and a seasonal shoulder rather than one simple window — our time-of-use guide covers how much that is worth. The RFID card is niche but real for a shared driveway or a duplex, where you want a session tied to a person.

The verdict

Buy the Emporia unless you have a specific reason not to. Same speed, same cable, a published warranty, an ENERGY STAR listing that may unlock a rebate, a UL listing, measured energy reporting, and the option of a plug-in version that moves house with you. That is a longer list of things you can hold someone to, at comparable money, and for most buyers it is the better-supported product. Buy the WOLFBOXif the install is genuinely harsh — coastal, industrial, fully exposed — and corrosion resistance is the thing you are optimizing for. In that specific case NEMA 4X for no premium is a strong argument, the hardware dial is a nice piece of design, and the app is more capable than most. Is the WOLFBOX WE48 faster than the Emporia Level 2?

No. Both are 48-amp chargers, which at 240 volts is about 11.5 kW — roughly 40 miles of range per hour at our 3.5 miles-per-kWh reference. Charging speed is set by amperage and by your car's onboard charger, not by the brand. Any claimed difference between them comes from different marketing assumptions about the reference vehicle, not from the hardware.

Which has the better warranty?

Emporia, unambiguously — it publishes three years. WOLFBOX publishes no warranty term for the WE48; its material refers to 24/7 support and lifetime assistance, which are support commitments rather than a warranty length. We record the term as 'Not published' rather than inferring one. On a hardwired device we would weigh that heavily.

Is NEMA 4X meaningfully better than NEMA 4?

The X denotes additional corrosion resistance on top of the water and dust protection both classes provide. In a sheltered suburban garage the difference is unlikely ever to show. In coastal salt air, an agricultural or industrial setting, or a fully exposed wall, it is a real advantage — and WOLFBOX charges no premium for it.

Can either of these be plugged in rather than hardwired?

The Emporia is sold in both hardwired and NEMA 14-50 plug-in configurations. The WOLFBOX WE48 is hardwired only. Note that a plug-in charger is limited to 40 amps continuous regardless of the unit, because a 14-50 receptacle sits on a 50-amp circuit — so the plug-in Emporia is a 40-amp proposition, not a 48-amp one.

Do I actually need 48 amps?

Often not. The ceiling is usually the car's onboard charger, and on many EVs and essentially every plug-in hybrid that ceiling is at or below 9.6 kW — at which point a 48-amp charger delivers exactly what a 40-amp one would. Check your vehicle's figure first; if it is 9.6 kW or lower, a plug-in 40-amp charger saves you the hardwired install entirely.
