The Grizzl-E line has always been the answer to one question: what do you mount on a wall with nothing over it, in a climate that has a real winter? The Classic Connectanswers it at 40 amps on a plug. The Ultimate 48A answers it at the top of the residential range — 48 amps, about 11.5 kW — and hardwires to get there.

What carries over is the part that made the brand: a metal case with a UL Type 4 indoor/outdoor rating and a published operating range of −30°C to +50°C, which is −22°F to 122°F. What is new is the ceiling, an extended-range Wi-Fi antenna, and OCPP support alongside Grizzl-E’s own app — genuinely unusual on a home charger. What it costs you is the plug: this one is hardwire-only, so it does not move house and it does not travel.

Grizzl-E Ultimate 48A

The Grizzl-E for people who wanted more than 40 amps. It keeps the metal UL Type 4 body and the published -22F floor that make the Classic Connect our exposed-install pick, then raises the ceiling to 48A and adds an OCPP radio on top of the Grizzl-E Connect app. Two catches: it is hardwire-only, so there is no unplugging it and taking it with you, and the SKU Amazon carries today is the NACS cable version, so a J1772 car needs an adapter permanently in the chain.

The case: a weatherproof body at the top of the residential range

There is a persistent gap in the home charger market. The units built to survive a genuinely exposed wall tend to sit at 40 amps, and the units that reach 48 or 50 amps tend to be molded plastic aimed at a garage. If your charger is going outside in a northern climate and you want the fastest AC charging a house can supply, the list of honest options is short. The Ultimate 48A is on it.

Grizzl-E publishes a UL Type 4 indoor/outdoor rating on a metal case, and — the figure we would actually shop on — an operating range of −30°C to +50°C. An enclosure rating tells you about water and dust; a published temperature range tells you about January. Most brands publish the first and stay quiet about the second, which is why we keep pointing at it. At 10.25 x 6.25 x 3.75 inches it is the same compact box as the rest of the line.

The unit is UL/cUL listed under file E510712, meaning it has been independently tested against the ANSI/UL 2594 standard that governs EV supply equipment. Charging speed, worked out

Forty-eight amps at 240 volts is about 11.5 kW. At our standard reference of roughly 3.5 miles of range per kWh, that is about 40 miles of range per hour. Over a ten-hour overnight window, roughly 400 miles — more than almost any household removes from a battery in a day.

Against the 40-amp Classic Connect’s 34 miles an hour, you are buying about six miles per hour. We would be doing you a disservice to dress that up: for a single car driven normally, it will never be the difference between a charged car and an uncharged one. Where it earns its keep is narrower and real — recovering 250 to 300 miles overnight after a long trip, or rotating two EVs through one charger on alternating nights, which our two-EV roundup covers.

One check before you buy at this tier, because it is the most common way people overpay: confirm your car’s onboard AC charger rating. The charger sets the ceiling, not the floor. A vehicle with a 7.7 kW onboard charger will draw 7.7 kW from this unit and 7.7 kW from a 40-amp one — identical. The install is the real decision

This is hardwire-only, and 48 amps means a 60-amp circuit. NEC Article 625 treats EV charging as a continuous load, so the circuit is sized to 125% of the draw — 48 × 1.25 = 60. That has three consequences worth pricing before you commit.

You lose portability entirely.There is no plug, so the charger cannot come with you when you move and cannot travel to a relative’s 14-50 outlet. Your panel may simply not have it.If the load calculation says there is no room for 60 amps, you are looking at a service upgrade that can cost several times the charger. The software, and why OCPP is the interesting part

The Ultimate connects over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi — on what Grizzl-E describes as a new extended-range antenna, which is a sensible fix for the actual problem, since a detached garage is one of the worst Wi-Fi locations in a house. It pairs with the Grizzl-E Connect app for charging statistics, schedules, remote control and utility demand/response programs. The differentiator is OCPP support. Almost every home charger speaks only to its manufacturer’s cloud, which means the useful life of the software is entirely the vendor’s decision. An OCPP-capable charger can be managed by third-party platforms and adopted into utility programs without the manufacturer’s blessing. For most households this will never come up. In year seven, when a proprietary app has been quietly retired, it is the difference between a charger and a smart charger.

Who should buy it — and who should skip it

Buy itif you are hardwiring anyway, your panel genuinely has 60 amps to spare, and the charger is going somewhere exposed — an open driveway, a carport with no walls, a climate with real winters. That combination is the narrow band where this unit has few honest competitors: most 48-amp chargers are not built for that wall, and most chargers built for that wall stop at 40 amps. The OCPP support is a genuine bonus for anyone who thinks about a decade of ownership rather than a year.

Skip itif any of three things are true. If you rent or might move, buy a plug-in unit — the Classic Connectgives you the same case and cold rating on a plug. Yes. Grizzl-E publishes this model as hardwire-only, and there is no plug-in variant. That is not just a product decision — a NEMA 14-50 receptacle is a 50-amp device and caps continuous draw at 40 amps, so there is no way to deliver 48 amps through a plug in the first place. Expect a licensed electrician, a 60-amp circuit and, in most jurisdictions, a permit and inspection.

What is OCPP and does it matter at home?

OCPP (Open Charge Point Protocol) is the open standard commercial charging networks use to talk to hardware. On a home charger it is mostly future-proofing: it means the unit is not locked to one vendor's cloud, and it can be adopted by a utility demand-response program or a third-party management platform. For most households it will never come up — but it is the sort of thing that matters in year seven, when a proprietary app has been discontinued.

Is the Grizzl-E Ultimate 48A ENERGY STAR certified?
