The problem PowerSmart solves
A house has a service — commonly 100 or 200 amps — and everything in it shares that budget. Under NEC Article 625, EV charging is treated as a continuous load, so a 48-amp charger wants a circuit sized to 125% of its draw: a 60-amp breaker. An electrician does a load calculation, adds that 60 amps to the range, the dryer, the air conditioning and the water heater, and tells you whether the service can carry it.
On a 200-amp service with a modest load, this is a non-event. On a 100-amp service in an older house, the answer is often no. At that point you have three options: buy a smaller charger and accept fewer miles per hour; pay for a service upgrade, which is typically the single largest line item on an EV charging quote and can involve the utility; or manage the load so the charger never contributes to a peak that the service cannot carry.
PowerSmart is that third option. Rather than a fixed 48-amp draw whenever it is plugged in, the charger sees what the house is actually pulling and reduces its own current when the house is busy — then takes the headroom back when the oven goes off. In the small hours, when nothing else in the house is running, it charges at full speed anyway. The result is a charger that fits into capacity you already have instead of demanding capacity you would have to buy.
The second device nobody mentions
Here is the detail we would want told to us before we bought: Emporia publishes that PowerSmart requires the Emporia Vue energy monitor. That is a separate product, installed in your electrical panel, with current transformers clamped around the service conductors. It is what actually measures whole-house demand — the charger cannot see the rest of the house on its own.
Practically, that means three things. Your budget is the charger plus the monitor, not just the charger. Your electrician is doing two jobs in the panel, not one, though they are usually the same visit. And the load-management feature depends on a second device staying connected and working. None of that makes it a bad product — whole-home energy monitoring is genuinely useful in its own right, and it is the same platform the standard Emporia app already integrates with. But a page that sells you PowerSmart without mentioning the monitor has left out the part that costs money.
Charging speed, worked out
Forty-eight amps at 240 volts is about 11.5 kW, which at our reference of roughly 3.5 miles per kWh is about 40 miles of range per hour— identical to the standard Emporia, the Wallbox Pulsar Plus and the EVIQO 48A. Amperage sets speed; nothing about PowerSmart changes the arithmetic.
What PowerSmart does change is the average. If load management is actively throttling the charger during the evening peak, your effective rate during those hours is lower by design. That is almost always fine: most home charging happens overnight, when the rest of the house is asleep and there is nothing to throttle for. But if you are the household that plugs in at 6pm and needs 200 miles back by 9pm while the oven, dryer and air conditioning all run, be honest with yourself that load management is going to slow you down — that is its job. Everything else: the same good charger
Under the feature, this is Emporia’s standard hardware, and that is a compliment. Forty-eight amps hardwired, a 25-foot cable, a NEMA 4 enclosure rated for outdoor mounting, UL listing against the ANSI/UL 2594 EV supply equipment standard, ENERGY STAR certification for standby efficiency, a 3-year warranty, and an app that tracks energy use rather than just switching the charger on and off. The Pro adds peak-demand management to that app, which is useful if your utility bills demand charges or you are on a time-of-use rate you want to stay under.

Who should buy it — and who should skip it
Buy it if an electrician has told you your panel cannot spare a dedicated 60-amp circuit, or if you are charging two EVs on one service. In both cases load management is not a luxury feature, it is the thing that makes the install possible, and it is almost certainly cheaper than a service upgrade. Skip it if your panel has room.
