What Charging Actually Costs You
There are two numbers for every charging session, and they never agree. Only one of them is on your electricity bill.

Ask an EV owner what charging costs them and you will usually get an estimate built from the car’s own display: it said it added 52 kWh, electricity is 16 cents, so that is about $8.30. It is a reasonable-sounding calculation and it is always low.
The reason is simple once you see it. Your car measures energy that arrived in the battery. Your utility meters energy that left the wall. Between those two points sits every loss in the system, and you pay for all of them.
Where the missing energy goes
None of this is a fault or a defect. The losses are ordinary physics and they show up in four places:
- Resistive heat in the cable and connector. Current through a conductor makes heat. It is why a charging cable is warm after a long session, and why cable gauge is a real specification rather than marketing.
- The charger’s own electronics.The wall unit has to be powered, switch large currents and talk to the car. That draw is modest but it runs the whole session, and it continues at a trickle even when nothing is plugged in — which is exactly what the ENERGY STAR standby requirement addresses.
- The car’s onboard converter. Usually the largest single loss. A Level 2 home charger delivers alternating current; the battery needs direct current. The conversion happens inside the car and it is not free.
- Battery thermal management. In cold weather the car spends real energy warming the pack so it can accept charge safely. That energy comes through your meter and never reaches the battery as stored charge.
The last one is why winter figures look so much worse, and why any single-number claim about charging efficiency deserves suspicion. The number is yours, not the internet’s. Our cold-weather charging guide covers the rest of what changes when it gets genuinely cold.
Level 1 is worse than Level 2, which surprises people
Intuition says the slower, gentler charge must be the efficient one. It is generally the opposite, and the reason is duration.
A share of the losses is essentially fixed overhead — the charger’s electronics, the car’s systems staying awake to supervise the session, thermal management ticking over. On Level 2 that overhead runs for a few hours. On Level 1, adding the same energy takes most of a day, so the same fixed draw runs five or six times longer while the useful energy delivered is identical.

It means the efficiency argument runs the other way from how it is usually stated, and it is one more input when you are weighing Level 1 against Level 2.
How to measure your own
Three routes, cheapest first:
1. Your utility. Many utilities now publish interval data for your whole home. If your charging is the only large overnight load, the shape of the overnight consumption tells you most of what you need without buying anything at all. Free, and the route we would try first.
2. A charger that meters.The most convenient option. A charger with real energy monitoring reports kWh delivered at the wall, session by session, and usually keeps a history. This is the single smart feature we think earns its money, for the reason this whole page is about — it is the one number your car genuinely cannot give you. 3. A circuit-level energy monitor at the panel.Works with any charger, including a basic unconnected one, because it measures the circuit rather than the appliance. It is more installation work and it is electrical work — a licensed electrician, not a Saturday project.
The three numbers worth calculating
Data you do not use is a hobby. Once you can see wall-side kWh, these are the calculations that change decisions:
Real cost per month.Monthly kWh at the wall multiplied by your actual rate, including any per-kWh delivery charges — which on many bills are a substantial fraction of the total and are routinely left out of online estimates. Real efficiency in miles per kWh.Miles driven divided by wall-side kWh. This will be worse than the figure on the car’s display and worse than the window sticker, because it includes the losses and they do not. It is also the only version of the number that predicts your bill. We use 3.5 mi/kWh as a stated reference across the site precisely so you can substitute your own once you have measured it — our methodology page explains why we publish the assumption rather than hiding it.
Share of charging in peak hours. If you are on a time-of-use tariff, this is usually where the money is. Moving a nightly charge from a peak window to an off-peak one is frequently a larger saving than anything you could achieve by buying a different charger. What the data will not tell you
Be honest with yourself about the limits. Charger metering is not a revenue-grade utility meter, and manufacturers do not generally publish an accuracy specification for it — so treat it as a good measurement rather than a legally exact one. It also cannot separate energy that went into moving the car from energy that went into warming it, which is the thing you would most like to know in February.
And it will not make charging cheaper by itself. It tells you where your money goes; the savings come from acting on it, which almost always means shifting when you charge rather than what you charge with.

Frequently asked questions
Why does my car say it added less energy than my charger reports?
Because they are measuring different things. Your car reports energy that reached the battery. A charger with metering reports energy that passed through the wall. The difference is charging loss — heat in the cable, the charging electronics and the car's onboard converter, plus whatever the car spent keeping the battery at a workable temperature. Your utility bills you for the larger number.
How much energy is lost when charging an EV at home?
It varies with temperature, charging level and the specific vehicle, which is exactly why measuring your own is worth more than quoting an average. Level 1 charging is generally less efficient than Level 2 because the fixed overheads run for far longer, and cold weather widens the gap because energy goes into warming the battery rather than filling it. The only way to know your number is to compare wall-side kWh against the car's reported figure over several sessions.
Do I need a smart charger to track charging costs?
It is the most convenient way, but not the only one. A separate energy monitor at the panel measures the charger's circuit directly and works with any charger, including a basic one. Many utilities also publish interval data for your whole home. What you cannot rely on is the car's own figure, because it excludes charging losses.
What should I do with the energy data once I have it?
Three things. Multiply monthly kWh by your rate to get a real cost per month rather than an estimate. Divide miles driven by kWh to get your true efficiency, which is usually worse than the window sticker. And check how much of your charging lands in peak pricing hours — on a time-of-use tariff that is normally the single biggest saving available to you.
Does an ENERGY STAR charger actually save money?
The certification is about standby efficiency — ENERGY STAR states certified chargers use around 40% less energy in standby than non-certified units. That is real but small, because standby draw is small next to charging draw. The bigger practical reason to care about ENERGY STAR is rebate eligibility, since many utility programs require it by model number.
