The setting you must change before anything else
We are leading with this because it is the single most important fact about the charger. United Chargers’ current Mini manual gives the factory default maximum as 40 amps, and states outright that the charger “can not detect the circuit amperage limit.” The automatic detection the Mini does have is of the supply voltage — it knows whether it is on 120 or 240 volts — not of what the wiring behind the receptacle can carry.
That matters because of what is in the box. The NEMA 14-30P adapter makes the Mini fit a dryer outlet; it does nothing to stop the Mini drawing 40 amps through a 30-amp circuit. Under NEC Article 625, EV charging is a continuous load limited to 80% of the circuit rating, which on a 30-amp circuit is 24 amps. So the sequence is: set the limit first, plug in second. There are two ways to set it. The Wi-Fi settings page lets you slide the maximum anywhere from 7 amps up. The better way, on a circuit smaller than a 14-50, is the four-position DIP switch inside the case, which caps the charger at 40, 32, 24 or 16 amps in hardware; the manual is explicit that the Wi-Fi setting can never exceed the switch. Set the switch to 24 and no app, no reset and no houseguest can put it back to 40. The cost is that reaching the switch means unplugging the unit and removing the front cover, which is a screwdriver job rather than a tap.
Four adapters, from the people who built the charger
We tell readers not to use plug adapters on EV chargers, and we mean it: an adapter removes the one safeguard a plug shape gives you, which is that it only fits the right outlet. The Mini is the exception we make, for two reasons that are both about who supplies the parts.
First, the adapters are United Chargers’ own, designed for this charger and listed on its spec sheet, not a third-party part of unknown rating bought separately. Second, the charger they attach to has the hardware cap described above, so the adapter and the current limit are part of one documented system. The four in the box cover the receptacles that actually turn up: a NEMA 14-30 dryer outlet, a NEMA 6-50 welder outlet, a TT-30 RV pedestal and an ordinary NEMA 5-15 household outlet. On 120 volts the Mini detects the supply automatically and runs at 7 to 12 amps, which is Level 1 charging — a few miles of range an hour, covered in our Level 1 roundup.
Two things the adapters do not change. A TT-30 pedestal is a 30-amp, 120-volt circuit, so the Mini on a TT-30 is a Level 1 charger, not a fast one — our RV park guide explains why the 14-50 pedestal is the one to look for. And every adapter adds a plug-and-socket joint that a native cord does not have, which is one more place for heat to build if a connection is worn. A metal case with a published temperature floor
The Mini’s enclosure is cast aluminum, 6.9 by 3.1 by 2.4 inches, at 9.8 pounds — heavy for its size, which is the metal. United Chargers publishes a Type 4 indoor/outdoor rating for it (the Amazon listing says NEMA 4X), and, more usefully, an operating range of −30 to +50 C, or −22 to 122°F. That is the same floor the brand publishes on the full-size Classic Connect, and it is a stronger claim than most portables make: plenty publish a sealing rating and go quiet on temperature, which is the half that decides whether the cable stays usable in January. Behind the case, United Chargers publishes a built-in GFCI plus over-current, over-voltage, under-voltage, missing-diode, ground-fault and over-temperature protection, self-monitoring with power-outage recovery, and UL certification under file E510712. UL 2594 is the core EVSE safety standard, and a checkable file number is what we look for on any charger, doubly so on one you will use on adapters. The unit is made in Canada and carries a three-year warranty, a year longer than the ELEGRP 40A or the Lectron 40A publish, two years longer than the native-plug EVDANCE chargers on our dryer-outlet page, and longer than several portables in this registry publish at all.
The cable, and a spec that differs by source
The Amazon J1772 listing and United Chargers’ original Mini manual both give the cable as 24 feet; the brand’s product page, which now describes the newer Mini Connect, lists 25. We record the lower figure. Either is plenty for a portable, and the input side is an 18-inch lead to the NEMA 14-50 plug, so the unit hangs close to the outlet rather than dangling from it. Smart features: which Mini are you buying?
This is where a careful reader should slow down. The J1772 Mini on Amazon describes “local smart features” — set the maximum current, monitor the charger, set a schedule, track consumption, enter electricity rates — and adds that you can connect “within range of charger.” That is a Wi-Fi settings page you reach from a phone or laptop on the spot, and it does the useful things: the current limit and a schedule for off-peak rates.
United Chargers’ product page, meanwhile, now lists the Mini Connect, with Wi-Fi on 2.4 GHz and the Grizzl-E Connect mobile app offering scheduling, charging history and remote access. Same body, same adapters, same current range — but remote control from outside the house is an app feature, not a local-settings feature. We describe the Amazon listing as it is written, and we would rather you check which version a given listing describes than assume. One thing neither version publishes is an ENERGY STAR listing. That is a small standby energy difference and a potentially larger rebate one, since some utility programs name the certification as a condition; our rebates guide explains how to check yours.
Charging speed, worked honestly
On a NEMA 14-50 at the full 40 amps the Mini delivers 9.6 kW, which at our 3.5 miles-per-kWh reference is about 34 miles of range an hour — the ceiling for any plug-in charger, since a 14-50 sits on a 50-amp circuit. United Chargers’ listing rounds the power to 10 kW and quotes 28 to 30 miles an hour, which simply assumes a thirstier car. On a 14-30 at 24 amps it is 5.76 kW and roughly 20 miles an hour, which across a ten-hour overnight window is about 200 miles — more than most daily driving, which is the honest reason a dryer outlet is enough for many households. On a NEMA 6-50 the full 40 amps is available again. Your car’s own onboard charger may cap any of these lower.
What you give up
Price. The Mini sits at the top of the portable band, well above the ELEGRP 40A and the Lectron 40A, and on a dryer outlet you are paying for 16 amps of capacity the circuit will never let you use. The premium buys the metal case, the cold rating, the adapters, the hardware cap and the warranty; whether those are worth it depends entirely on whether you will ever use more than one outlet.
It arrives unsafe for a small circuit until you act. Not a defect, but a responsibility the cheaper native-plug chargers do not hand you. A charger with a 14-30 plug molded on can only draw what a 14-30 allows; the Mini can draw 40 amps through any adapter you fit, and stopping that is a switch you set.
The settings reach depends on the version. If you want to check on a session from work, confirm you are buying a Connect listing; the local-features version will not do that.

Who should buy it — and who should skip it
Buy itif your only 240-volt outlet today is a dryer’s and a 14-50 is coming later: set the switch to 24 now, move it to 40 when the electrician leaves, and you have bought one charger instead of two. Buy it if you charge at more than one place — a home garage, a cabin with a welder outlet, an RV pedestal — and want the brand that built the charger to have built the adapters. And buy it if you want a portable that can take a winter outside, because the temperature floor is published and the case is metal.
Skip itif you have a NEMA 14-50 in a garage and will never charge anywhere else; the ELEGRP does that job for far less and publishes five current steps of its own.
