A Tesla-style plug straight out of the wall at a full 48 amps, with the safety listings to back it — and no app, which matters far less on a Tesla than it would anywhere else.

Most home chargers ship with a J1772 connector, which fits every non-Tesla EV and fits a Tesla only with an adapter hanging off the end. The Lectron Nexus takes the other route: a native NACS connector — the Tesla-derived standard now published by SAE as J3400 — that plugs straight into the car with nothing in between. Forty-eight amps, an IP66 body, UL-standard ETL listings and an ENERGY STAR certification.

The obvious omission is Wi-Fi. There is no app, no account and no scheduling in the charger. On most chargers we would count that as a real loss; on a NACS charger it is close to a non-issue, because a Tesla schedules its own charging in the car and does it well. What a native NACS connector actually saves you

Be clear-eyed about the size of the win, because it is a convenience win rather than a performance one. An adapter does not slow charging down, does not reduce amperage, and does not compromise safety when it is a certified one. What it does is add a step: you fit it, you make sure it is seated, you remember where it went, and you accept that a small expensive object lives on the end of a cable in a driveway.

A native NACS charger deletes that step permanently. For a single-Tesla household that plugs in every night for a decade, that is thousands of small interactions removed. It also removes a failure mode: a partially seated adapter is one of the more common causes of a charge session that quietly does not start, which our troubleshooting guide covers.

The connector itself is worth a sentence of context. NACS was Tesla’s proprietary plug; SAE has since published it as the J3400 standard and most major automakers have committed to it, which is why NACS-native home chargers are now a normal category rather than a Tesla accessory. The missing app, and why it matters less here

On a J1772 charger for, say, a Chevy or a Hyundai, we would treat “no app” as a real deduction — scheduling around an off-peak electricity rate is one of the highest-value things a home charger does, and if the charger cannot do it you are relying on the car’s software to be good.

On a NACS charger, the car’s software is good. Tesla vehicles have handled scheduled departure, scheduled charging and charge limits natively for years, in an app most owners already have open. Duplicating that in the charger adds a second schedule to keep in sync and a second thing that can lose its Wi-Fi connection. There is a genuine argument — not a rationalization — that a dumb charger under a smart car is the cleaner architecture.

What you do lose is energy monitoring at the charger. Charging speed and the install

Forty-eight amps at 240 volts is about 11.5 kW, which at our reference of roughly 3.5 miles per kWh is about 40 miles of range per hour into the car. That is the same practical rate as every other 48-amp charger we cover; the NACS plug does not change the arithmetic.

The unit is hardwired only. An electrician terminates it into a dedicated 240V circuit, and under NEC Article 625 — which treats EV charging as a continuous load — that circuit is sized to 125% of the draw: 48 × 1.25 = 60, so a 60-amp breaker. Two consequences follow. Your panel has to be able to spare that, which is not a given on an older 100-amp service; our how many amps guidecovers working it out. On weather, Lectron publishes an IP66 rating — dust-tight and sealed against powerful water jets — along with ETL listings against UL 2594, UL 2231 and UL 2251, an ENERGY STAR certification and an FCC mark. The 23-foot cable is mid-pack and a J-hook plus holster are included, which is a small thing that stops the connector living on the floor.

Who should buy it — and who should skip it

Buy it if you drive a Tesla or another NACS vehicle, you are hardwiring a permanent home charger, and you would rather never think about an adapter again. It is the most straightforward native-NACS unit we cover and the top pick in our Tesla charger guide for exactly that reason.

Skip itin three cases. If your household has a non-Tesla EV in it too, buy a J1772 charger and put the adapter on the Tesla — that way round the adapter only touches one car. Do I need a NACS charger for a Tesla?

No. A Tesla can charge from any J1772 home charger using a J1772-to-Tesla adapter, and that route is often cheaper and gives you a wider choice of chargers. A native NACS unit like this one simply removes the adapter from the process — one less thing to seat correctly, lose, or have walk off a driveway.

How fast does the Lectron Nexus charge?

At 48 amps — about 11.5 kW — roughly 40 miles of range per hour at our standard 3.5 miles-per-kWh reference. That is the top practical tier of home AC charging, and about 400 miles across a ten-hour overnight window.

Does the Lectron Nexus have an app?

No. There is no Wi-Fi radio and no account. For a Tesla or another NACS vehicle this matters less than it sounds: the car itself handles scheduled charging, charge limits and off-peak timing, and it does so more reliably than most charger apps.

Can a non-Tesla EV use the Lectron Nexus?

Only with a NACS-to-J1772 adapter. If your household has a mix of a Tesla and a J1772 car, think carefully — a J1772 charger plus a J1772-to-Tesla adapter is usually the more flexible way round, because the J1772 car plugs in directly and only the Tesla needs the adapter.
