What “budget” actually buys here
The useful question about a cheap charger is not whether it is cheap. It is which corner got cut. On a lot of low-cost EV equipment the answer is the safety certification, and that is the corner that should end the conversation. It is not the corner Lectron cut. This unit is ETL listed against UL 2594 (the EV supply equipment standard) and UL 2231 (personnel protection systems for EV supply circuits), which means a nationally recognized testing laboratory has actually tested it. The corners that werecut are convenience corners. There is no Wi-Fi radio, no app and no account — scheduling happens in the car. The cable is 16 feet, which is the shortest in our registry and where we would push back hardest; the EVIQO and Emporia both ship 25. The warranty is two years rather than three. And Lectron does not publish an enclosure or IP rating for this model at all.
We want to be precise about that last point rather than generous or alarmist. A missing rating is not a claim that the unit will fail outdoors; it is the absence of a claim that it will not. Because we will not invent a spec a manufacturer has not published, our position is simply that this is a garage-and-shelter charger, and if your charger has to live fully exposed you should buy one that publishes a rating. Charging speed, worked out
Forty amps at 240 volts is about 9.6 kW. At our standard reference of roughly 3.5 miles of range per kWh, that is about 34 miles of range per hour, or roughly 340 miles across a ten-hour overnight window. For context, the US average daily drive is a small fraction of that; this charger replaces a normal day’s driving in about an hour and a half.
Against the 48-amp field, you are giving up about six miles of range per hour. That is a real number and a small one, and it is worth putting next to what those six miles cost elsewhere: a 48A charger needs a 60-amp circuit rather than a 50-amp one, which is a bigger breaker, heavier wire and often a harder conversation with your panel. The install, and what portable really means
This is a plug-in unit. If you already have a NEMA 14-50 outlet — the 240V outlet style used for electric ranges and RV hookups — on a properly sized circuit, installation is plugging it in. If you do not, an electrician installs the outlet and the circuit, and under NEC Article 625 that circuit is sized to 125% of the charger’s continuous draw: 40 × 1.25 = 50, so a 50-amp breaker. “Portable” is worth defining honestly, because the word does a lot of work in this category. It does not mean the charger carries its own power. It means the unit is light enough to unplug, coil up and throw in the trunk, so it works at any properly wired 14-50 outlet — a relative’s garage, a rental, a campground pedestal, a workshop. That is genuinely useful, and it is also the reason a plug-in charger suits renters: you take it with you when you move, and you leave behind an outlet rather than a hole in someone’s wall.
One safety note we would give anyone using a portable charger away from home: plug into a properly installed outlet on a dedicated circuit, and do not run a 40-amp charger through an extension cord or a household adapter. The charger is rated for continuous 40-amp draw; a generic cord almost certainly is not, and that mismatch is where fires start rather than in the charger itself.
Who should buy it — and who should skip it
Buy it if you want the lowest-cost honest route to real Level 2 charging, you already have (or can cheaply add) a 14-50 outlet, and the charger will live somewhere sheltered. It is also the right answer for renters and anyone who expects to move, because the whole charger comes with you. Skip itif the charger has to live fully outdoors with no published rating to lean on; if 16 feet of cable will not reach where you park — the long-cable roundup is the fix; or if you want the charger itself to handle off-peak scheduling and energy tracking rather than leaving it to the car. For that last case the Emporia Level 2is the smallest step up that actually solves it. And if you do not have a 240V outlet and cannot get one, the honest answer is not this charger at all — it is a Level 1 unit, which is slower but needs nothing installed.
