The spec table is the story
WOLFBOX sold a 48-amp charger here before this one — the WE48, now discontinued on Amazon — and our review of it was largely about what the brand declined to put in writing: no kW figure, no warranty term, no temperature range. The E-series page is a different document. It publishes a full column per model, and for the 48-amp unit that column reads: up to 11.5 kW, 200–240 V AC, current output at 16 / 24 / 32 / 40 / 48 amps, a 60-amp-or-greater breaker, hardwired with a 23-inch input cord, 25 feet of charging cable, NEMA 4 and IP66, a 12.68 × 7.46 × 4.76 inch wall-mount body, 2.4 GHz 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi and over-the-air firmware updates.
That is most of what you would want before letting an electrician wire something to a 60-amp circuit, and it is a genuinely better disclosure record than the product it replaces. The published current steps are the useful spec
Sixteen, 24, 32, 40 and 48 amps. It looks like a footnote and it is the line that decides whether this charger fits your house.
Forty-eight amps needs a 60-amp circuit, because NEC Article 625 treats EV charging as a continuous load and sizes the breaker to 125% of the draw. Plenty of older panels cannot spare that. A charger with a published step-down range is still usable in that house — set it to 32 amps on a 40-amp breaker, or 24 on a 30-amp one — and you keep the option of turning it back up if the service is ever upgraded. A charger that only publishes “adjustable” leaves you finding that out after the box is open. The second condition on the 48 amps is the car, and it is the one people skip. A vehicle whose onboard charger accepts 7.7 or 9.6 kW will accept exactly that from an 11.5 kW charger — the extra capacity does nothing at all. The screen is the feature nobody lists
A 4.3-inch LCD on the charger reports charge rate, elapsed time, voltage, internal temperature and energy delivered, with an LED strip that colour-codes the charging stage. There is also Wi-Fi, an app, RFID card start, plug-and-charge, and Alexa and Google Assistant control.
We keep coming back to the screen. Almost every smart charger at this price puts all its status behind an app, an account and a network connection, and all three of those are things that fail: a router change, a firmware update, a brand that loses interest in its software. A display that is wired to the same board as the contactor keeps telling you what the charger is doing in year eight regardless. What the app does not appear to offer is the one software feature we think earns its keep: published wall-side energy metering. WOLFBOX describes real-time charging data and cost estimates rather than a measured kWh figure at the wall. If knowing exactly what a charge drew matters to you — for a rebate, a reimbursement or your own curiosity — the Emporia Level 2 is explicit about it and this is not. The ENERGY STAR claim does not check out for this model
This is the finding we would most want a buyer to read, because it is the one attached to money.
WOLFBOX’s E-series spec table gives the safety certifications for all three models as “CSA / FCC / Energy Star”. We went to look for the listing, because ENERGY STAR publishes its certified-EVSE list openly. There are exactly two WOLFBOX entries on it: the E40, at a 40-amp nameplate rating and 9.6 kW, and the E50, at 50 amps and 12 kW. Both were qualified in April 2024. There is no 48-amp WOLFBOX entry.
Amazon’s item model number for this charger is E50(48)— the 48-amp configuration of the E50 chassis — and it is reasonable to think the hardware is nearly the same. But an ENERGY STAR certification is granted to a model at a tested nameplate rating, and the standby power draw that the certification is actually about is measured on the unit as configured. A rebate administrator will check the certified list for a model number, not reason about chassis lineage.
So: if you want this charger, buy it for the specs, not the certification. If a utility rebate that names ENERGY STAR is part of your budget, either confirm the exact model number against the certified list yourself, or buy something whose listing is not in question — our ENERGY STAR roundup is the shortlist. This is not a hypothetical distinction on this site: the discontinued Grizzl-E Classic carried an ENERGY STAR listing that its successor does not, and readers shopping from the older model number were the ones who got caught.
There is also a wording distinction worth noticing in the same row. WOLFBOX says it is CSA certified and that it meetsUL 2594 standards. CSA is a real third-party certification from a recognized body, so this is not a case of certified versus uncertified — but “meets UL standards” is a conformance statement rather than a UL listing, and those are different claims pointed at the same standard. The gap that is still there: temperature
WOLFBOX publishes an enclosure rating and no operating temperature range, on either the E-series page or the Amazon listing. That combination is worth understanding rather than just noting.
IP66 and NEMA 4 are ingress ratings: they describe how well the box keeps dust and hose-directed water out. They say nothing about what happens at −20°F, and cold is what makes a charging cable stiff and awkward and what puts electronics outside their rated window. For contrast, the Leviton EV40P publishes −30°C to 50°C and a cable rated to −30°C, and the Grizzl-E Ultimatepublishes a −30°C floor. WOLFBOX publishes neither figure.

Who should buy it — and who should skip it
Buy it if you want a full 48 amps, hardwired, with a complete published spec sheet and a screen that works without the app, at a price well under the marquee brands. You have confirmed your panel can carry 60 amps, or you are happy to run it at a published lower step; your car can actually take more than 9.6 kW; and the install is not somewhere brutally cold. On those conditions it is a lot of charger for the money, and a clearly better-documented one than the WE48 it replaces.
Skip itif a utility rebate requiring ENERGY STAR is part of your budget — the Emporia Level 2 is the same 48 amps at similar money with a listing that is on the certified list and a warranty with no channel caveat, and our head-to-head settles that choice properly. Skip it if your climate makes an unpublished temperature range a real risk. Skip it if you rent or expect to move, because hardwired means it stays and a plug-in 40-amp unit comes with you. And skip it if your car cannot accept more than 9.6 kW, in which case the 60-amp circuit is money spent on headroom you will never reach.
