Adjustable amperage is the real feature, not 50 amps
Every spec sheet for this charger leads with 50 amps, and that is the least interesting thing about it. Fifty amps needs a 60-amp circuit under the NEC’s 125% continuous-load rule, and plenty of houses cannot spare one. What actually makes the Home Flex platform useful is that the output is set in software anywhere from 16 amps up to 50.
That solves a specific and common problem. You buy a charger today against the circuit your panel can spare today — often 40 amps on a 50-amp breaker. If you later add capacity, upgrade the service, or move to a house with a bigger panel, you raise the setting instead of buying another charger. Compare that with a fixed 48A unit, which on a 50-amp circuit simply runs at 40A anyway: you paid the 48A price for headroom you cannot use, and you cannot see or control what it is doing. Adjustability is also the honest answer for a house where the electrician has flagged tight capacity but a full load-management system feels like overkill. You simply run the charger at a number the panel can carry. It is cruder than the dynamic load management on the Emporia Pro— a fixed lower ceiling rather than one that moves with demand — but it needs no second device and no subscription.
The app, on a car that already has one
ChargePoint’s app is the most mature in home charging, and that is a real thing rather than marketing: scheduling, reminders, session history, energy use over time, and a company large enough that the software is still going to exist in five years. On a J1772 charger for a non-Tesla EV, that is a genuine differentiator.
On a NACS charger the calculus shifts, because the car is already good at this. A Tesla handles scheduled departure, scheduled charging and charge limits natively. Adding the charger’s scheduler on top gives you two schedulers, which is worse than one unless you actively want the second.
So what does the app still earn? Two things, and they are worth being specific about. First, measurement at the wall: the charger reports what it actually delivered, independent of the car’s own estimate, which is the number you want if you are checking charging against your electricity bill. Second, a single management point for a household with more than one EV, or one EV and a series of guests. If neither of those describes you, be honest that the app premium is buying a feature you will open twice.
Charging speed, the enclosure and the install
At the 50-amp ceiling, about 12 kW, and our standard 3.5 miles-per-kWh reference, the charger adds roughly 42 miles of range per hour— the fastest tier of home AC charging. Set to 40 amps for a 50-amp circuit, that becomes roughly 34. The enclosure is NEMA 3R, which is rated for falling rain, sleet and external ice — fine for a garage or a wall with an overhang, a step below the Type 4 and 4X bodies on the Grizzl-E Classic Connect and Autel MaxiCharger. The unit is hardwired, so an electrician terminates it into a dedicated circuit sized to whatever amperage you plan to run — and note that you can size the circuit for what your panel allows and set the charger to match, rather than being forced to 60 amps. The cable is 23 feet, mid-pack, and the warranty is three years.
Who should buy it — and who should skip it
Buy it if you want a native NACS plug and a genuinely good charger app, and you would rather spend once than optimize. It is the only unit we cover that sits at that intersection, and the adjustable amperage makes it the safest buy if you are not yet certain what circuit you will end up with.
Skip it if any of three things are true. If the app is not the reason you are here, the Lectron Nexus gives you a native NACS plug at 48 amps for meaningfully less.
