Should an EV Charger Go in the Garage or Outside?
Inside is gentler on the hardware. Outside is often where the car actually parks. The right answer is usually decided by the charge port, the cable and the panel — and the enclosure rating decides whether outside is a problem at all.

The short answer
If the car parks in a garage, put the charger in the garage. It keeps the connector dry and clean, protects the cable from sun and ice, and usually shortens the run from the panel. If the car parks in a driveway, on a carport or at the curb, put the charger where the car is — outside — and buy one rated for it. The mistake is not choosing inside or outside; it is choosing a location that the cable cannot reach comfortably, or an enclosure that was never meant for the weather it gets.
Three things decide the spot before the weather does
Where the charge port ends up.Charge ports sit on different corners of different cars, and people park nose-in or reverse-in out of habit. Park the car the way you actually park it, find the port, and measure to the wall from there. How far it is from the panel.The wire run from the breaker to the charger is often the largest part of an install quote. A garage that shares a wall with the panel can be a short, cheap job; the far side of a detached garage can mean a long trench or a subpanel. PG&E publishes an average installation cost of $400 to $1,200 on top of the charger, and distance is one of the things that pushes a job above that range. What the cable crosses. A cable that has to cross a path or a doorway is a trip hazard and gets driven over. Put the charger so the cable hangs from a holster or hook and reaches the port without crossing where people walk.
What to look for if the charger goes outside
The enclosure rating. NEMA 3R handles rain and sleet and is fine on a wall protected by an eave. NEMA 4 adds hose-directed water and is the practical floor for a charger with nothing over it. NEMA 4X adds corrosion resistance, which matters near salt air. IP66 and IP67 are the international equivalents: IP66 withstands powerful water jets and IP67 brief submersion.
A published operating temperature range.An enclosure rating covers water and dust; it says nothing about cold. If you see hard winters, look for a published low-temperature figure rather than a vague “all-weather” claim.
A cable that stays flexible and a place to put it. A holster keeps the connector out of puddles and ice; a hook keeps the cable off the ground where it can be driven over or frozen into a shape.
Hardwired or an outdoor-rated receptacle. A plug-in charger outside needs an outdoor receptacle that stays weathertight while something is plugged into it; a hardwired charger avoids the outdoor receptacle altogether. Ask your electrician how your local code applies.
What changes in the garage
Almost nothing about the choice of charger — every charger we recommend is rated at least for indoor use, and a garage asks less of an enclosure than any outdoor wall. What a garage changes is the layout. Leave room to open the car door on the charger side, keep the unit clear of where bikes and bins get stacked, and think about the garage door: a charger mounted where the car sits with its nose to the back wall may leave the cable too short when someone reverses in.
If the garage is detached, the distance question from above becomes the main cost of the job. If the garage is attached but the car usually sits in the driveway because the garage is full, be honest about that before you mount the charger inside.
Winter, briefly
Cold affects charging mostly on the car’s side, not the charger’s. The U.S. DOE and EPA publish that in cold weather most of an EV’s extra energy use goes to heating the cabin, and they advise preheating the car while it is still plugged in, so the energy comes from the wall rather than the battery. Before the electrician arrives
Decide the spot, measure the cable reach with the car parked normally, check the enclosure and temperature ratings against where the charger will live, and have the electrician confirm the circuit and the permit. Frequently asked questions
Is it OK to install an EV charger outside?
Yes, if the charger is rated for it. Look for NEMA 4 or IP66 at minimum on a charger that will be fully exposed; NEMA 3R is fine under an eave or overhang. Check the manufacturer's published operating temperature range too if you have hard winters or hot summers. Many home chargers are designed for outdoor installs.
Is it better to put an EV charger in the garage?
It is easier on the hardware and the cable, and it keeps the connector clean and dry, so if the car parks in the garage, the garage is usually right. What decides it in practice is where the car's charge port ends up, how far that is from the panel, and whether the cable reaches without being stretched across a walkway.
Does cold weather damage an outdoor EV charger?
A charger rated for the temperatures you see is designed to operate in them — the Grizzl-E Classic Connect, for example, is published from -22°F to 122°F, and the Autel MaxiCharger's NEMA 4X enclosure is rated for use down to around -40°F. Cold does slow charging, but mostly on the car's side: a cold battery accepts current more slowly, an effect that is modest on home AC charging.
Where should an EV charger be mounted?
Near where the car's charge port will be when it is parked, at a height the cable can hang from without dragging, and close enough to the panel to keep the wire run short. Measure from the charger's location to the charge port with the car parked the way you actually park it, then allow slack.
Does an outdoor EV charger need a special outlet?
A plug-in charger installed outdoors plugs into an outdoor-rated receptacle, and an outdoor receptacle needs to stay weathertight while in use — a question for your electrician under your local code. A hardwired charger avoids the outdoor receptacle entirely.
