Why this adapter changes what you can buy
Look at the home charger market and the imbalance is obvious. J1772 chargers exist at every price point from budget portables to premium load-managing wall units, from a dozen brands, in constant competition. Native NACS chargers are a newer, thinner category with fewer models and less price pressure — and, as our Lectron Nexus review notes, most of them have no app at all.
A twenty-dollar-class adapter collapses that difference. With it in the box, a Tesla owner can buy the Emporia Level 2, the EVIQO 48A, the Grizzl-E Classic Connect or anything else on our Level 2 roundup and have it work. That is usually the cheapest route to a good home charger for a Tesla, and it is why we keep recommending it even to people who came looking for a NACS unit.
The adapter is also what makes public and workplace charging painless. Destination chargers, hotel chargers, workplace units and most non-Tesla public AC charging are J1772. Keep this in the frunk and none of those are a problem.
The amperage math: why it is never the bottleneck
The instinct that an adapter must be a restriction is reasonable and, here, wrong. Lectron publishes an 80-amp / 240V rating for this adapter. Home charging circuits do not get anywhere near that: the fastest chargers we cover run at 48 or 50 amps, which under the NEC’s 125% continuous-load rule already demand a 60-amp breaker. A residential EV charging circuit above 50 amps of actual draw is vanishingly rare.
So the chain of limits runs: your circuit, then your charger’s rating, then your car’s onboard charger, and the adapter sits well above all three. In practice you get whatever the J1772 charger delivers — typically 40 to 48 amps, 9.6 to 11.5 kW, roughly 34 to 40 miles of range per hour at our standard 3.5 miles-per-kWh reference. Certification is the whole safety question
An adapter carries the full charging current through a connection you assembled yourself in a driveway, sometimes in the rain. That is exactly the sort of component where third-party testing earns its keep, and it is why we will not recommend an uncertified one at any price.
This adapter is UL 2252 certified. UL 2252 is the standard covering EV charging adapters specifically — not the charger standard, not a generic electrical mark — and certification means a laboratory has tested the part against it rather than the seller asserting it. The IP67 rating is the second half: sealed against dust and rated for temporary immersion, which is the right bar for something that lives outdoors on the end of a cable. Lectron also publishes an operating range of roughly −22°F to 122°F.
What to avoid is the listing that says “UL materials”, “meets UL standards”, or nothing at all. Those are not certifications. Our guide to reading charger certifications unpacks the difference in detail, and it applies to adapters at least as strongly as to chargers.
The honest drawbacks
Three, and none of them is a reason not to buy it — just things worth knowing.
It is one more object.It has to be seated firmly every time, and a partially seated adapter is a common cause of a charge that silently does not start. If you wake up to an uncharged car, that is the first thing to check — our troubleshooting guide works the fault down in order.
It is AC only.This adapter does Level 1 and Level 2 charging. It does not work at a Supercharger or any DC fast charger, and no amount of wanting it to will change that — DC fast charging is a different protocol, not a different plug shape.
It hangs on the end of a cable. Mechanically that adds weight and leverage at the connector, and in a public or shared setting it is a small valuable item on a cable in the open. Neither is serious; both are real.
Who should buy it — and who should skip it
Buy it if you drive a Tesla or another NACS vehicle and you want access to the whole J1772 charger market at home, or to J1772 destination and workplace chargers when you are out. At its price this is close to a default purchase; there is no serious argument for a NACS driver not owning one.
Skip it only in the narrow case where you have already committed to a native NACS home charger, you never charge anywhere else, and you want nothing extra in the car. And note the opposite case: if your household has a non-Tesla EV as well, you want the other adapterinstead — or both, which is what a mixed-EV household usually ends up with.
