The situations this actually solves
There are four, and they are more common every year as NACS spreads beyond Tesla.
Charging at someone else’s house. A relative or friend has a Tesla and a Wall Connector in the garage. Without an adapter, your J1772 car looks at it and does nothing.
Hotels and Destination Chargers.Tesla’s Destination Charger network is AC charging at hotels, restaurants and parking structures. Many locations are Tesla-connector only, and this adapter opens them.
A mixed-EV household with a NACS charger. If you bought a native-NACS home charger like the Lectron Nexus for a Tesla and then added a J1772 car, this adapter is what stops that being an expensive mistake. It is also why our Tesla charger guide suggests a mixed household usually installs a J1772 charger and adapts the Tesla instead.
Borrowing a Mobile Connector.Tesla’s portable charger is common and often loaned; with this adapter a J1772 car can use one. Expect Level 1 speeds if it is plugged into a household outlet.
The amperage math, and why 48A is enough
The adapter that goes the other way is rated to 80 amps; this one is rated to 48. That reads like a downgrade and mostly is not, because 48 amps is already the top of residential AC charging. The fastest chargers we cover deliver 48 to 50 amps, and under NEC Article 625’s continuous-load rule those already require a 60-amp circuit. There is very little home AC equipment above this adapter’s ceiling.
At its 48-amp / 11.5 kW limit and our standard 3.5 miles-per-kWh reference, that is about 40 miles of range per hour — but only if the Tesla-side source can actually supply it. A hardwired Wall Connector can. A Mobile Connector on a household 120V outlet is Level 1 equipment and will give you roughly five miles an hour no matter what the adapter is rated for. The adapter never adds speed; it only avoids subtracting any. Our charging levels guide covers where each source lands.
One more limit sits below all of this: your car’s onboard charger. Some EVs accept only 32 or 40 amps of AC regardless of what you plug them into. That ceiling is in the car, not the cable, and no adapter or charger raises it.

The Supercharger question, answered plainly
This adapter does not work at a Supercharger, and no AC adapter does. It is worth explaining why rather than just asserting it, because the misunderstanding is common.
AC charging — Level 1 and Level 2, everything in a home garage — sends alternating current to the car, and the car’s onboard charger converts it to DC for the battery. DC fast charging skips that entirely: the charging station does the conversion and pushes DC straight into the pack, under a digital handshake that negotiates voltage and current continuously. Those are different systems that happen to share a connector shape on NACS vehicles. An adapter that rearranges pins cannot create the DC handshake, and attempting DC charging through AC-rated hardware is genuinely dangerous.
If you drive a CCS car and want Supercharger access, that is a separate product category with its own certification requirements — not this adapter and not any variant of it.
Certification, and what to avoid
Lectron publishes SGS certification to UL 2251 for this adapter. SGS is an independent testing body and UL 2251 is the applicable standard for EV charging adapters and connectors; together that means the part has actually been tested rather than described. That is the bar, and it is not negotiable on a component carrying 48 amps continuously through a joint you make in the weather.
The listings to walk past are the ones that say “UL-certified materials” or “built to UL standards” without naming a certifying body, and the ones that publish no standard at all. Note also that Lectron does not publish a warranty term or an IP rating for this adapter — the J1772-to-Tesla version publishes IP67 and this one does not, so we would treat it as the less weather-committed of the two and store it in the car rather than leaving it fitted outdoors.
Who should buy it — and who should skip it
Buy itif you drive a J1772 EV and you regularly encounter Tesla AC charging — a family member’s Wall Connector, hotel Destination Chargers, or a NACS charger already installed at home. It is inexpensive insurance against arriving somewhere with a charger you cannot use, and it is our pick for J1772 owners in the adapter roundup.
Skip itif every charger in your life is J1772 already — most home chargers, most public AC charging and every unit in our Level 2 roundup are. And skip it specifically if you are buying it hoping for Supercharger access, because it does not do that and nothing in this category does. If you drive a Tesla rather than a J1772 car, you want the adapter that goes the other way.
