NACS to CCS Adapter Review

The one adapter we cover that has nothing to do with home charging. It opens the Tesla Supercharger network to a CCS1 car at up to 500 amps — if, and only if, your automaker has granted you access.

Every other adapter on this site solves an AC problem: getting a home charger’s plug to fit your car. This one solves a DC problem, and it is the highest-stakes adapter a driver can buy. It converts the NACS (Tesla-style, SAE J3400) connector on a Supercharger to the CCS1 inlet on a non-Tesla EV, at up to 500 amps and 1,000 volts.

Two things matter more than any spec here. First, this is a DC fast charging accessory — it does nothing for your garage, and it is not compatible with AC charging stations at all. Second, it only works if your automaker has enabled Supercharger access for your vehicle: the adapter is hardware, and the permission is software on Tesla’s side. It lets a CCS1 car whose maker has bought into the Tesla network plug into a Supercharger, at up to 500 amps and 1,000 volts. Check this first: does your car actually qualify?

We are putting this above the specs because it is the thing that makes the purchase work or not, and no amount of adapter quality changes it.

Tesla’s Supercharger network was closed to other vehicles for most of its life. It has been opening to non-Tesla EVs manufacturer by manufacturer, through agreements between Tesla and each automaker. When a manufacturer signs on, its cars gain access — and that access is enforced in software, through the vehicle and the charging session, not by the shape of the plug.

So the adapter is the physical half of a two-part problem. Buy it for a car whose maker has not enabled Supercharger access and you will have a well-made piece of hardware that the network refuses to charge. Lectron states plainly that the product is designed exclusively for CCS1 EVs that have Supercharger access through their automaker, and directs buyers to check with the automaker — advice we would repeat rather than soften.

Before you buy:confirm your manufacturer’s current position, and confirm it for your model year specifically, since access has generally rolled out by model and year rather than by brand in one step. Some automakers supply their own adapter to eligible owners, which would make this purchase redundant — worth checking too.

What the certification and the interlock actually buy

Adapters are the part of the charging chain where corner-cutting is easiest to hide and most dangerous. There is a large market of uncertified DC adapters, and the difference between them and this one is not cosmetic.

UL 2252is the safety standard covering EV charging adapters. Certification means an independent laboratory has tested the part against that standard. Lectron publishes the Vortex Plus as the first publicly available NACS-to-CCS adapter certified under UL 2252, citing thermal and mechanical performance. At 500 amps, thermal performance is the whole ballgame — the failure mode of an underbuilt DC adapter is heat at the contacts, and heat at the contacts at this current is a fire, not a fault code.

The interlock is a mechanism that keeps the connection secure for the duration of a high-voltage session. Two reasons that matters here specifically. A connection that works loose under load is an arcing risk rather than an inconvenience. And the well-documented nightmare with DC adapters is one becoming stuck in a charge port mid-session, which turns a twenty-minute stop into a tow. A purpose-built interlock is engineering aimed squarely at both.

The rating, in context

Five hundred amps at 1,000 volts is a specification aimed at V3 and V4 Superchargers, and it comfortably exceeds what any current CCS1 passenger car will draw. Lectron publishes up to 150 miles in roughly 15 minutes, with the sensible caveat that actual rates depend on the Supercharger generation and the vehicle.

The practical implication is the useful one: the adapter will not be your bottleneck.Your car’s own DC charging curve almost certainly will be. Every EV tapers its charging rate as the battery fills and according to cell temperature, and that curve — not the connector — is what determines whether you are back on the road in twenty minutes or forty. Nothing you plug in changes it.

What it does not do

It is not an AC adapter.Lectron states it is not compatible with AC charging stations. You cannot use it at a Tesla Destination Charger, a Tesla Wall Connector, or any Level 2 unit. If that is what you need — a J1772 car charging from a Tesla AC source — the Tesla-to-J1772 adapter is the correct part, and it is a fraction of the price.

Who should buy it — and who should skip it

Buy it if you drive a CCS1 EV whose manufacturer has enabled Supercharger access, and you road-trip often enough that network coverage genuinely constrains you. That is the entire case, and where it applies it is a strong one: the Supercharger network is the densest and most reliable DC network in North America, and gaining it changes which routes are comfortable. The certification and interlock are what make this the version of that purchase we would make.

Skip itif your automaker has not granted access — the hardware alone will not get you a session. Skip it if your automaker already supplies an adapter to eligible owners. Skip it if you rarely fast-charge: most EV owners do the overwhelming majority of their charging at home, and this adapter costs multiples of an AC home adapter while doing nothing at all in your garage. And skip any uncertified alternative that undercuts it, because at 500 amps the certification is the product.

Will this adapter let any CCS car use a Tesla Supercharger?

No, and this is the single most important thing to check before buying. Lectron states it is designed exclusively for CCS1 EVs that have Supercharger access through their automaker. Access is granted vehicle-by-vehicle by agreement between Tesla and the manufacturer, and enforced in software — the adapter is only the physical half. What does UL 2252 certification mean on an adapter?

Can I use this adapter with a Tesla?

No. Lectron is explicit that it is not compatible with Tesla vehicles — a Tesla already has the NACS inlet the Supercharger cable is designed for, so there is nothing to adapt. This part runs one direction only: NACS source to CCS1 car. For a Tesla charging from a J1772 home charger, you want the J1772-to-Tesla adapter instead.

How fast will it actually charge?

That depends on the Supercharger generation and your car, not on the adapter. Lectron publishes up to 150 miles in about 15 minutes at the 500A / 1,000V rating, and states that real rates vary with both variables. The point of the rating is that the adapter is not the bottleneck — your vehicle's own DC charging curve almost certainly is.

Do I need this for home charging?
